Watercolor Wash Tutorial with Video

Hello and thanks for stopping by today! Would you like to learn how to create a simple and basic watercolor wash for your cardmaking project? I am often asked how it is done with a natural look. It’s really as easy as choosing the proper paper and tools and you too can achieve the look you desire. Let’s have a look at an example with this technique on a Christmas card created with Christmas Pines stamp set. Available in the Annual Catalog, it’s a versatile set for an easy card.

Christmas Pines stamp set

Some stamp sets that are in my stash are a go to for my creative moments. Others I work with are just “sure things” that will never fail to create a card. Christmas Pines is one of these guaranteed stamp sets that are sure to bring a smile. Add the benefit that there are matching framelits and it’s a fun And quick card from start to finish.

Watercolor Wash

There are two items needed to create a watercolor wash with success. The first item is the proper type of paper. I have used Watercolor Paper for today’s project. The paper’s ability to react with the fluid is going to determine the look and finish after it is colored with ink. Speaking of coloring, using a brush is also important. I used an Aqua Painter to first apply clean water to the Watercolor paper. With the same brush, I dabbed from a pool of ink on the inside lid of 3 stamp pads.

Working from light shade to dark and allowing the layers to dry in between application, the look of depth can be achieved. While each coating of color was being applied, I did give pressure to the barrel of the Aqua Painter that allowed the ink to flow onto the paper. Experimenting with color and water is a fantastic way to get accustomed to this technique.
