U Fold Card with Video

U Fold Card

One of the really fun and creative aspects of cardmaking for me is getting to create a special fun fold card. While it does take a bit of brain work, versus a standard card, a U Fold card or bridge fold as it’s also known, really makes a statement. I created this card from a desire to share a keepsake with my friend Meg, who was my recent travel buddy to OnStage in Salt Lake City, Utah. She is a lovely and caring person and I created this card with her tastes in mind. The design instructions are below and are easy enough to duplicate on your own with success. It’s really not as hard as it looks!

Thanks to Jay Soriano at Mitosu Crafts for the basic instructions on how to achieve a U Fold card. He created a card with striking colors and design that also show off this fancy fold style in a brilliant light.

Sheltering Tree stamp set

Sheltering Tree is a grand old stamp set. Often overlooked, it can lend a peaceful mood to a project with beautifully written fonts and sentiment. I chose this set because of the sentiments but ended up using the tree to fill the design with peacefulness and tranquility. The tree is recessed into the U portion of the card to lend depth and anchor the project’s design. I stamped the tree in Soft Suede, Always Artichoke and Pear Pizzazz. The sentiment is also Soft Suede.

To decorate the corners of the design, I’ve fussy cut flower sprays from Whole Lot of Lovely DSP. I’d like to think this card is like a bouquet of flowers that brings a smile to my friend’s face when she see it 🙂

How to Create a U Fold or Bridge Card

There are so many ways to create a U Fold card or a bridge fold card as it’s also called. I am sharing basic instructions to help keep it simple and duplicate with success. I chose to feature DSP on top of a card stock layer but it’s really not needed for every card created in this design. I like the look of framed DSP so it was a design choice.

Step 1: Cut the card base to 8″ long by 4 1/4″ tall and then score this piece from left to right at 1 1/4″, 2 1/2″, 5 1/2″, 6 3/4″ and burnish all of the folds.

Step 2: Cut the DSP panels to cover the front of the card as follows:  Cut 4 of 1″ x 4″ strips of DSP (or cut from card stock of you’d like the look of DSP framed on card stock as I have shown in my project). Cut the back panel at 2 3/4″ x 4″ .

Step 3: Cut the bridge section from same color card stock as card base at 1 1/4″ x 5 1/2″ and the DSP layer at 1/8″ smaller than card stock section.

Step 4: Stamp the back panel with the tree truck and then the leaf stamp. I offset the truck to the left to allow the branches and leaves to settle on the right of the panel. Stamp sentiment on a strip of white card stock.

Step 5: Glue the panels to the card base, including the bridge piece and the sentiment. After they are dry, attach the bridge to the farthest left of the card and allow glue to settle a bit before folding the left section over and looking to the right of the card. The place where the right hand side of the bridge lies is where it will be glued in place to permanently attach the bridge.

Step 6: I decorated the card with fussy cut DSP, vellum paper and Gold Glimmer paper. The vellum and gold are cut with the leaf punch and placed in the style of a floral spray. Sequins and Glitter Enamel Shapes work well as accents to the design.

Step 7: To place in an envelope, fold the card down to the right and carefully slide into the envelope. You’re all set!
