Sugarplum Dreams Shadowbox card

Sugarplum Dreams Shadowbox card

Today I am happy to bring you a project I recently completed for AddINKtive Designs, by the wonderfully talented, Bronwyn Eastley. Following one of Bronwyn’s tutorials, I have had a fun time making this Shadowbox card, customized with a Nutcracker Ballet theme. The tutorial instructions are clear and concise, which really was a help in zipping through this project. I chose to use the tutorial for creating this project with Sugarplum Dreams stamp set and a few other items from my supplies.

Let’s go to the Nutcracker Ballet!

One of my favorite things about creating with an AddINKtive Designs tutorial is the flexibility I have in customizing the project. Changing the colors to suit the personalized project is part of the fun of creating a shadowbox card. I’ve added some personal touches, such as changing the theme of the project, to make it just from me.

This is an interactive card. Slide the card to the left or to the right and it lays down flat to be mailed in an envelope! While your hands are sliding to either side, watch the characters seem to move and dance inside the theater. My family snuggles in on Christmas Eve each year with cookie and a warm drink to watch the Nutcracker Ballet. Before the children came along, it was a personal tradition to attend the Houston Ballet of the Nutcracker each year and after moving to New Jersey, my husband and I attended a local amateur dance group’s performance. So you can see that the Nutcracker is a Christmas tradition for us and is very close to our hearts. This project will now be a keepsake to help my children remember fondly the memories of Christmas together.

Here are a few unique touches

For the theme and atmosphere of the project, I used Sugarplum Dreams stamp set. The stamped images fit well into the box’s theater design. Each image is stamped in classic dye ink (regular stamp pads) and colored with Stampin’ Blends alcohol markers for a no-line coloring look. After colored, I added Dazzling Diamonds Glitter with the Fine Tip Glue Pen to highlight areas on each character (like areas on the sword, crown).

Inside the shadowbox side walls, I’ve added Glimmer Paper snowflakes to help reflect the light inside the box and carry the design theme around the project. There are a few snowflakes on the front as well to help the eye travel inside the project and out.

To give the look and feel of an actual theater, there are “curtains” attached to the outside side walls and inside the box as well. Ruffled embossing folder with Cherry Cobbler card stock made this a snap! The strip inside appears as if it is the top curtain on a stage. I fussy cut along the ruffled line and attached it in the same way as all other inside wall to wall components. The bottom strips that hold the stamped images are cut from Wood Textures DSP to give the look and atmosphere of an actual stage.

On the back wall of the shadowbox is a panel that was first stamped in black ink and then embossed with the Softly Falling embossing folder. My memories of the Nutcracker Ballet always include falling snow 🙂    There’s also the giant Christmas tree that is a well known stalwart to the stage scene of this story.
