Coloring vs not coloring Mediterranean Moments

Ever stamp an image and wonder if you should add color or leave it as is?

Mediterranean Moments is a stamp set of 4 large scenes set somewhere in the Mediterranean. A cafe or a patio, a cobbled street, a sunny room where the cat sits on a chair soaking in the sun. There are many possibilities with this group of beautifully drawn stamp images. So nice that in fact, it’s not necessary to even color them. Today I’m taking a look into whether or not to color a nicely drawn image.

Measurements for this project are:
-Card Base of Basic Black card stock: 5 1/2″ x 4 1/4″ (scored and folded from 4 1/4″ x 11″)
-Soft Suede card stock (for the layer) cut at 3 1/4 ” x 4 3/4″
-Whisper White (for the stamped card front) card stock cut at  3″ x 4 1/2″

-scraps of Whisper White and Soft Suede for the sentiment and inside (1″ x 2 1/4″ for white)

The sentiment is taken from Avant Garden. The script font compliments the drawn lines and they work well together. I also used this stamp set to decorate the inside of the card.  You can order Avant Garden as a free gift with the purchase of $50 in products now through March 31st.

Here are the three coloring options:

-Black image stamped onto Whisper White card stock (image will remain uncolored)
-Black image stamped onto Watercolor paper  (use Watercolor Pencils – Old Olive, Basic Gray & Early Espresso)
-Black image stamped onto Watercolor paper (use Watercolor Pencil in Basic Black to add shading only)

By making three color options of the same design, I want to demonstrate how the overall look of the card changes to be able to fit your needs. In choosing the pencil colors to feature, I chose neutrals and kept the colors to a minimum. For example, Old Olive and Early Espresso can be used in different shades on different areas of the card and compliment each other and the card stock colors. This design lends itself to remaining uncolored as well. I had to stop myself from coloring because it looked really nice as it was stamped.

Another option is to stamp the image and choose to only add shading with a black pencil. Watercolors will allow you to spread and dilute the color but it would also work well to use a #2 pencil and add shading where you like. The overall theme with all of these options is that you do have options with this stamp set.

You have TWO OPPORTUNITIES to make this card with me at one of my LIVE EVENTS this month.  I’ll be live on YouTube on Feb 23rd at 1:00 pm US Eastern time zone and on FaceBook live on Feb 24th at 8:00 pm Eastern as well. I will make all three versions of this card and discuss the design concept and coloring possibilities. If you would like to craft along and have the supplies, please gather them up and meet me! If you would like to order the items so you can make the card just as I am making them, please email me asap to order supplies. If you are a member of my team (Art of Imagination) your items are in the mail and headed your way. I can’t wait to craft live with everyone… see YOU there!

Using a large black and white image can make an easy card design. Try out this design and share a photo with me so I can give you a shout out on a future blog post. I would LOVE to see what you create! Thanks for stopping by today.
